From Virginia Tech to Vancouver: A Journey of Academic Achievement and Personal Growth by Arthur Louie - August 2023 Scholarship Essay
As a double major in neuroscience and psychology, my educational journey at Virginia Tech has been nothing short of transformative. Among my various accomplishments, the experience that stands out as my biggest achievement was my foray into undergraduate research, culminating in my first presentation at an international conference and a remarkable exploration of Vancouver, Canada.
My venture into undergraduate research marked a significant turning point in my academic path. The moment I delved into the world of scientific investigation, I realized that I was not merely studying theories from textbooks but actively contributing to the expansion of knowledge in my field. In the fall of 2021, I undertook a research project that sought to examine the interplay between entrainment amplitude and phase coherence in the context of sensory entrainment and attentional performance. This project was a stepping stone that led me to uncharted territories, enabling me to engage with real-world challenges and exercise critical thinking skills in ways I had never done before. The pinnacle of this journey was my inaugural presentation at the SPR (Society of Psychophysiological Research) Conference in Vancouver, Canada. This experience marked my first international academic expedition and underscored the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. Presenting my findings to a diverse audience of esteemed colleagues and educators not only boosted my confidence but also offered a platform to exchange ideas and foster connections within the global scientific community. Through this conference, I grasped the significance of effective communication and presentation skills in conveying complex research findings. This newfound ability has not only bolstered my academic profile but has also equipped me with a crucial tool for my future aspirations.
Beyond my academic achievements, my time in Vancouver was a true revelation. The city's vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and diverse communities provided an enriching backdrop for my journey. Exploring the city's neighborhoods, immersing myself in local traditions, and engaging with people from various walks of life broadened my horizons and nurtured my personal growth. Vancouver's captivating blend of modernity and nature inspired me to think holistically, mirroring the interdisciplinary approach I aim to bring to my academic pursuits.
At the core of my experience in Vancouver was the exploration of the captivating research question that guided my journey. The research I conducted not only investigated the relationship between entrainment amplitude and phase coherence but also contributed to a deeper understanding of sensory entrainment and attentional performance. By studying these intricate interactions, I not only enhanced my analytical skills but also acquired a practical understanding of how research informs and advances our understanding of complex cognitive processes.
In conclusion, my journey from Virginia Tech to Vancouver has been marked by significant achievements and personal growth. Engaging in undergraduate research, presenting at an international conference, and exploring the vibrant city of Vancouver have collectively shaped my academic and personal identity. These experiences have fortified my commitment to scientific inquiry, interdisciplinary collaboration, and effective communication – qualities that will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping my future aspirations as I continue to push the boundaries of knowledge in the fields of neuroscience and psychology.
