The Toolbox by Armida - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

Most kids in a school setting will sit in a classroom and stare at the board thinking something like "Why on earth am I here? What is the importance of this?" and often goof off because they don't think that an education has any importance to their lives in the future. I disagree with this popular notion. The skills that kids are learning in a classroom are pieces of a puzzle that have the potential to create any sort of innovative thinker with skills in several fields of study. An education is just as important as learning life skills through experience and should be taught and understood as such.

It is important for students to learn the foundation of every field of study at a young age so kids understand how useful the tools of education are in real life. Often what happens in the education of young minds is that they're getting a lot of information thrown of them that they don't understand, so all they want to do is shut down and continue not understanding. The blocking out of education begins at a very young age. If kids are taught skills and are shown the connections to real life, it will help them realize how important their education is if they want to comprehend what's going on in the world around them.

Students who are getting closer and closer to starting on their own path should not say that an education isn't useful. Someone who is passionate in pursuing a career is going to succeed when they know everything about their field of study and even more from other perspectives. I want to be an actor, for example. There are characters in shows who have their own knowledge about the world, not just my own. If I'm playing a math genius in a show, I'm going to need to know a great deal about math because this character doesn't know anything about theatre. If I only know things about theatre and acting but nothing about math, my performance is not going to be very convincing. The same thing goes for people going into any field of study. Anyone who knows a wide arrange of knowledge is going to succeed.
