Saving People From Cancer by Ariel - January 2024 Scholarship Essay

Cancer is a terrible disease that causes mutated cells to divide and destroy the body. Every time someone gets diagnosed with cancer it is the most spine chilling news to receive. It's heart wrenching to find out a loved one has to go through such a horrific illness. Cancer has taken so many lives that I wanted to make a difference by helping raise money for people in my community who have had the disease or are getting treatment for it.
First, our school volleyball team which I am a part of has raised thousands of dollars for women with breast cancer. October is breast cancer awareness month so almost all teams wear pink in support to beat breast cancer. We have a wonderful program in our town called the pink fire truck organization. My volleyball team and I have raised money by asking for donations when we play in our dig pink game and we have presented the final amount to this organization. This money was used for women in our community who need help to pay for treatment to become healthy again. This year however our team donated a check to a family whose mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and she is still fighting to this day.
Second, there is a cancer called Leukemia that has infected a classmate in my grade. He has fought it into remission and he is healthy now thanks to many people's donations. My friends and I helped donate one thousand dollars to him and his family during this hard ship. It is a blessing to see him back at school and being healthy after he had struggled for at least 6 months.
Finally, I have participated in several beat cancer 5ks. I think that helping organize these events and participating in them has helped encourage others to donate their time and money to raise cancer awareness as well as cancer research. I have helped organize 2 runs in order to raise money for the take down of cancer.
I believe that the biggest contribution to not just my community but to the world is being able to make a difference by saving lives. My grandma has struggled through breast cancer and lived to beat it and that is why I'm passionate about beating cancer in my community. I hope that one day our world can be cancer free because of people who care about others enough to donate time or money for cancer research.
