The Brightest Lesson in "The Darkest Minds" by Ariel - June 2022 Scholarship Essay
I’ve always had a hard picking a favorite novel of mine, as reading is one of my favorite pass times and I don’t want to limit myself in saying what story I’ve enjoyed the most. With that being said, The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken has given that idea within me a run for my money.
While being a story of unbelievable fiction, as all of, as far as readers know, America’s population of children either die or are found to have these five different abilities, the lessons that I myself have witness are very real.
Told through the point of view of Ruby, a girl whose powers are considered the most dangerous, she faces a plethora of trials and tribulations. The biggest ones don’t have to do with her abilities. They have to do with finding out the people she can trust.
The main lesson she has taught me and hopefully the other people that have read this book is that true friends will stick with you no matter what. Truly no matter what.
There are times where she nearly gets some of her friends killed. WHere she takes her friends into places that bring up horrible memories. Yet, they stick it out and are there for her.
Going along with this, I am able to see that you won’t meet someone and immediately know they are a true friend. One of the boys she meets in her small group is fondly called Chubs. He is the brainiac of the group, and the one person who absolutely doesn’t think Ruby should be hanging around them and even travelling with them. He is all for handing her over to the people that are trying to use her.
As they are forced to hang around each other and get to know one another, they ultimately form a bond. A bond that comes out true friendship form.
