Becoming a CPA by Arianna - August 2024 Scholarship Essay
Throughout high school, figuring out what I wanted to do with my life was challenging. While some of my peers seemed to have it all figured out by my freshman year, I struggled to find my path. I knew I wanted to go to college, but I had no idea what I wanted to study or what career to pursue. I explored various possibilities; I considered law, veterinary science, and other fields, but nothing felt right. I searched for something that would truly capture my interest and align with my strengths.
It wasn't until I took an accounting class in junior year that things began to fall into place. At first, I wasn't sure what to expect. I'd heard people talk about how complex accounting could be, and I was worried it might be something I wouldn't enjoy. But as I worked through the material, something clicked. I found myself not only understanding the concepts but also enjoying the challenge. I was pretty decent at it, and for the first time, I felt like I had found something I could see myself doing.
When I started telling people I wanted to major in accounting, the responses were often the same: "That's a difficult major." I'd read the same things online—how accounting is one of the most challenging fields, how the coursework is rigorous, and how the CPA exam is one of the most challenging tests. But instead of being discouraged, I found myself feeling more determined. Yes, it won't be easy, but I'm ready. I know I can succeed if I put my mind to it. I'm not afraid of the hard work because I've already proven that I can handle and thrive in complex material.
The decision to pursue a career as a CPA isn't just about finding a stable job; it's about setting a goal that truly excites me. I'm passionate about the work and eager to continue learning and growing in this field. The road ahead won't be easy, but I'm ready to face those challenges head-on. Becoming a CPA is my next big educational goal, and I'm fully committed to making it happen.
This journey has taught me that it's ok not to have everything figured out immediately. It's ok to explore different paths and take the time to find what indeed resonates with you. For me, that journey led to accounting, and I'm excited to see where it will take me next.
