If I Were a College Professor by Arianna - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

Built on liberty and justice for all, the United States is ironically a divided country. In the wake of events such as the 2017 presidential election, high tensions have run amuck in the streets of America. Disagreements and hatred weaken the unity that has been fought for over the centuries.
In this day in age, if I were a college professor I would teach sociology. My senior year of high school, I grabbed at the chance to take the sociology course. At the time, I didn’t even know what the word sociology meant. However, I left the class with more knowledge than I began with. Through this class, I gained knowledge about social structure and functioning in America and cultures throughout the world. It was because of this class that I was able to learn why people from different backgrounds may all be faced with the same situation, but react to it differently.
Hatred is a strong emotion that it felt today. The way I see it, it all begins with ignorance. Then it is the unknown that leads to fear, the fear of the unknown is one way to put it. It is this fear that causes hatred among people. It is this hatred that cause human beings to lose humanity. It is all one unfortunate domino effect.
I believe that if people took the time to stop and learn about those around them, there’d be no tension. If I were a college professor, I would not only teach sociology but how to love where we come from and those around us.
