Experience Life by Ariana - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

The idea of a New Year’s resolution is often one of the only major goals that people set for themselves at the start of the New Year. My New Year’s resolution is one that I have set for myself since I was in the ninth grade. I chose to not only make straight A’s for that school year, but to make the most of my school year academically. I have always pushed myself toward success in any and every subject that I could. I expect nothing less than my very best in every class. Every year of high school, I have chosen classes that would not only challenge me academically, but would also challenge me emotionally. In order for a student to mature and succeed in their school career, they need enough of a force against them that that can grow and overcome that force, but it would also drive them to want to succeed for themselves. My parents have never been worried about me slacking off and letting my grades slip because I want to see growth in my own school career.
One of my fatal flaws is pride in my own success, especially in school. This year’s resolution was to see past my pride and make the most of my senior year. I chose to experience more real-world life before I have to enter it for myself in the next few years. My school has an internship program which gives a select 50 students the chance to choose the type of site they would like to visit and experience the day to day life of those they work with. I have chosen various hospital settings because my ultimate goal is to become a nurse in the near future. I have witnessed many different things that not many have the chance to see for themselves unless they work with it daily. I have volunteered my time at these hospitals to help the hospital staff and help to gain more hands on experience with the patients and other staff members. These experiences will stick with me much longer than other experiences high school students may be facing before they go off on their own. This resolution, to succeed and experience as much as I can, will help me be a better student because it is further pushing my drive to be the best that I can be and learn as much as I can through my experiences.
