What makes us up by Anushreya - February 2025 Scholarship Essay

I have been hooked ever since I heard about DNA-that a mere four-base sequence of A, T, C, and G can determine from the color of your eyes to what diseases you are going to get is just so amazing. Later in my studies, I found genetics to be not just any branch of science but the fundamental basis of life itself. From biology and medicine to agriculture, or even psychology, everything now seems to have a root in genetics. This realization instilled in me an eagerness for knowledge and thus shaped my academic goals for the future.

Genetics is, in fact, that one link that connects every subject that I have ever studied. In biology, it explains evolution, inherited traits, and genetic disorders. In chemistry, it relates to molecular structures and biochemical reactions driving life. It even traces human ancestry and interpretations of ancient pandemics in history. Whatever field I seem to explore, I keep finding my way back to genetics, striving to find how genes influence everything that surrounds us. The more I learn, the more I want to know about things such as CRISPR gene editing, hereditary diseases, and genetic engineering.

This has influenced my academic and career goals. My interests lay in genetic research: how we apply DNA to cure medical problems, whether it be developing therapies for gene-influenced and rare diseases or enhancing the effectiveness of personalized medicine. Genetics is the area in which I would like to continue my career, so upon admission, I plan to major in this subject. Later on, it would be nice to work in a laboratory dealing with new outstanding discoveries. Genetics is much more than just a subject; it's a direction I'd want to pursue all my life.
