Why Physical Therapy by Antonio - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
As an athlete in a high-contact sport, I’ve seen more than my fair share of injuries, whether they were something as small as a sprain or a season-ending injury like a torn ACL or a broken Tibia. One of the things I’ve learned about injuries is that they are not simply physical impairments. They can also impact an athlete's mental health and well-being, often destroying their confidence and putting them in a very difficult spot on the field and off. Suffering through my own physical injuries, as well as the mental anguish that accompanies them, has left a mark on me that I will never forget. It has also helped me find my life’s purpose.
I truly believe that physical therapy is my calling in life. This is not simply a hunch, but a decision I’ve reached because of my personal experiences. I suffered my first injury—a broken arm—in the first grade. In middle school, I developed a misaligned pelvis which caused severe back pain. Throughout my high school soccer years, I’ve collided with other players more times than I care to remember. Each time I was guided through recovery by physical therapists and trainers. These outstanding professionals not only helped me get back in shape and on the field, but they also guided me mentally. They helped me regain my confidence and directed me to a more positive, optimistic mental state.
In the future, I want to be in a position to help not just athletes, but anyone who is suffering through the pain and confusion of an injury. Becoming a physical therapist means that I will be able to work with patients face-to-face. This will give me the chance to learn not only about their ailments but also who they are as people. With this as my philosophy, I will be able to create a positive environment where each recovery plan is based upon building a healthier body and mindset where patients can grow as people, not just athletes or workers. Injuries are a part of life and can occur at any age from any number of activities. As a physical therapist, I hope to create a lasting impression with each patient. I want them to feel confident that they are healing and that they will have my continued support and dedication regardless of their situation. Seeing patients grow is the most rewarding feeling in the world that a healthcare practitioner can experience, and it is one that I intend to leave the office with every single day.
Working with physical therapists has had a lasting impact on my life and changed my view of a world often shadowed by injuries. When I felt like there was nothing left to work for, they were a glimmering light of positivity that changed my life. This impact is one that I will never forget and one that I intend to share with every future patient who comes through my door.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Antonio Serraiocco
