How The Pen Changed My Life by Anthony - September 2015 Scholarship Essay

As I walk through the door of the Anton News main office, I am greeted by a receptionist. I stand confidently and introduce myself, “Good day Sir, I am Anthony Pugliese. I am here for an interview for the internship with Anton News.” Not knowing that this interview would change my life. I am seventeen-year-old boy in the year 2014, anxious to pursue my passion of being a published journalist. As I sat in a room beside the editor and publisher, I displayed my passion for journalism and various ideas I had for the sports column.
“Anthony, we would love to have you on our team as an intern.” Announced the editor Jennifer Fauci. Those were the most fulfilling words I have came across in my young life. I accomplished one goal, but I also knew that was one goal of many. As time progressed I was not only an intern, but a published sports journalist. Each week I would set appointments to meet with high school athletes and coaches and write articles upon high school sports. I was living the life of a journalist. However, I am never satisfied with myself because I always know there is a way to better myself. I pushed myself by taking on large tasks, fulfilling any project and meeting each deadline. I had taken on roles that had pushed me out of my comfort zone. Now I was not only growing as a journalist but a student and a person.
While I interned, I was introduced to a new vocabulary and way of writing. These skills had benefited me not only at my work place but in the classroom. I became a more diverse writer and individual. As I covered each story I learned something new. I began to grow hungry for a new mission. Nonetheless each task I committed to I was expected to meet specific deadlines. I can proudly say I did meet each deadline with ease. These tasks not only tested my ability to make it in the journalism field, but taught me resilient time management and responsibility.
My experience as an intern with Anton News was a situation that made me a better student. A student who learned about responsibilities at a young age. Being surrounded by dedicated and talented writers was something I absorbed while in their presence. As I put myself in this situation, I grew into a better writer, speaker, and student. Not only did I put myself in this situation but it was a pen and paper that generated my thoughts. My niche for writing is something that I hold with pride. That is how, the pen changed my life.
