An Art Student's Resolutions by Annie - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

As an artist working towards a degree in fine arts, my new year's resolutions are often about art and reaching that educational goal. Last year my aim was to work on lighting and shadows in my art, and worked hard all year to achieve that goal. I've made great strides in improving in that area, and in turn it made my color work more sophisticated and well rounded. This year I am resolving to make more finished, professional looking work, and to get in a show somewhere; be it school exhibit, coffee shop, or actual gallery.
I am planning to transfer to a 4 year university in the fall. Many of the schools I am applying to are art specific, and the ones that aren't have excellent fine art programs. Having polished work to show while applying will help me get into these competitive schools and programs. In art classes critiques are held at midterms and finals, and holding myself to professional standards will make these experiences better without smudges or unfinished looking work to diminish the highly educational and helpful conversations.
Getting my art into some sort of show will also help in applying to schools. It will also help in my personal learning experience, as I will discover what in my art people like or dislike, what is most successful in public spaces, and how to interact with gallery professionals.
Having these resolutions will push me through 2016, as I finish my last year at community college and go to a university to continue my artistic journey. They will motivate me to be a better student, and a better artist.
