Why I Want To Study Architecture by Annette - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
“This room looks like a pigsty!” My mum stares in disbelief as she looks down at her 5-year-old daughter. Mutilated scraps of tissue paper flutter around as the blades of the fan above endlessly spin. As she wonders how she’s going to clean this mess up, my glue-covered hands are already searching for the next victim of my pair of scissors, muffling out any words coming out of my mother’s mouth. In the background on the TV is what created this entire mess, another episode of one of my favorite TV shows ‘Mister Maker’. The show that showed me ordinary things don’t always have to stay ordinary, the show that mixed fun and creation, the show that filled my imagination, the show that birthed my love for art. Growing up, I used to get fixated on different hobbies, doing them for a while then suddenly becoming disinterested, but art has been one if not the only thing that has stuck around in one way shape, or form and has infiltrated most of my spare time. Throughout the course of teachers asking what we wanted to be growing up, I never really had a concrete answer for them, all I knew was that I wanted it to involve art in some way. One day I came across a 3d model of the Sagrada Família on a documentary, and I just thought that was one beautiful building, the thought process and creative planning that went into it, was absolutely spectacular, that was when I knew architecture was the right path for me.
The area of architecture that intrigues me the most is the way architects can reflect history and culture through their work, bringing it different aspects of their inspiration into the work, almost like a melody, every line, every curve, tells a different story. You can really envision the architects thought process during that time through their work, whether they created it in a state of happiness or if it was a depressing time. Additionally, how external lighting placement can affect the whole structure's aura and feeling.
An architectural education can help me understand a variety of cultures, people, and even the environment because architecture isn’t just about designing buildings. Furthermore, it would teach me a unique perspective on the world, I would learn to examine, detect and interpret spaces in ways others might not considering both practical and aesthetic elements in my design while communicating my ideas properly as well as with its increasing focus on sustainability, it offers a chance to make a substantial impact on our environment.
Staying up to date with architectural findings is essential for me, my sources mostly being documentaries, the news and online resources. Knowing what the latest trends are and the best ways to implement an idea. As for its role in society, architecture can promote sustainability, inclusivity and possibly even social change, creating spaces that imitate people's morals and shape our communities.
