How I Can Lend A Helping Hand by Annelise - December 2023 Scholarship Essay
I've had many different ideas of what I wanted to do when I got older. I would go from wanting to be in marketing to wanting to be a teacher, the list of things I wanted to do was never ending. Only, one big event changed my life forever. It changed how I looked at things, and most importantly it made me question; what impact do I want to make?
When I was 14 my Mom and I were in a bad car accident. I luckily got out with small scale injuries, but my Mom's injuries were more severe. She suffered from a brain bleed, shattered elbow, and broken femur. I remember how hard it was for her while working on the path of recovery in the hospital. Every night when I would FaceTime her should would tell me how much she missed me and wished she was home, but she would also take the time to tell me about all of her improvements she made in her Physical Therapy. She could go on and on about how much her Physical Therapists were helping her learn to walk again and giving her lots of support through the whole process. And that's when I discovered that I want to be that person for people.
I continuously grew inspired by her Physical Therapists and decided to look into that career more. I discovered that by becoming a Physical Therapist I could help people in so many different ways and there were a variety of things I could do. But the most important thing is that I can help support and motivate people while they are in a time of need. And not only can I be a person for them to lean on, but I can also help them heal and recover.
By pursing a degree in Physical Therapy I can help people recover emotionally and physically, therefore making an impact to help better people's life. Because I know from first hand experience how a tragic event and injury can effect one person's life. And I can recognize how happy it makes people to meet their goals, especially when it's in a time of recovery. The first time my Mom walked again she was thrilled, and so was her physical therapist. My goal in life is to walk along and support any person to reach their goals, and being able to help people reach their goals in the recover process can make a difference for a patient and their family and friends.
