Ten Year Olds Do Wear Wigs by Anne - April 2014 Scholarship Essay

So you might be asking yourself, when does a ten-year-old girls wear a wig? In Margaret Peterson Haddix's book, Because of Anya, you see this young girl wearing a wig. One of Anya's classmate, Keely, wants to know why Anya is wearing one. The truth behind this is Anya has alopecia areata, which is an allergic to ones own hair. This story teaches many important life events that have impacted my life.

Anya teaches you to be strong and to fight through any diseases or struggles life might through at you. She is a young forth grader that is diagnosed with an uncommon disease and must battle through it. She chooses to wear a wig to school, even though she is afraid people will think she is odd. This clearly shows that even if she is afraid of what others think she is determined to wear the wig and be strong in what she believes in.

In addition, you learn the importance of friendship. When the wig falls off in gym class, Anya is embarrassed and Keely, whom she has never talked to before, turns to her to encourage Anya to go back to school. It is with Keely's help that she is able to return to school and continue to live the average life of a forth grader.
Strength and friendship are key characteristics to this story, and to my life. I must have the strength to get through life's tough challenges and obstacles. My friends and their relationships with me are a key aspect of my life. They help me get through the day by a simple help with homework, or even help with deciding where to go to school. Anya is a young girl, who everyone can learn from.
