My Goal by Annamarie - August 2022 Scholarship Essay

This year I am a senior at Ascension Catholic High School. My goal this year is to make up for all the lost time I have had in my high school career. As a freshman, I attended Assumption High school. It was all going normal until Covid hit us in March 2020. This cut freshmen year very short, not allowing me to get the education I wanted to receive. In sophomore year, we went to school every other day. This was very difficult for me because I care about my education, and this made me miss a lot of what I needed. After the Christmas break, I switch to a new school, Ascension Catholic. Here we went every day for the rest of the year. My junior year was the hardest. Between Covid, storms, and my own medical issues, I frequently would miss school, limiting my education. The first day was August 6th. We came to school for one day, then the high school had a 10-day covid quarantine. We came back on August 27, and by August 29th, we were out again for Ida. We returned from this storm on September 9th. Again in January, we were out for 10 more days due to Covid.

Now junior year I struggled with many medical issues that kept me from coming to school every day. I was back and forth with a bone and joint clinic trying to figure out what was wrong. Soon, we figured out it was not my back issues but my hips. I ended up having to have bilateral laparoscopic hip surgeries. My first one was on August 23rd, and the second surgery was on December 20th. Recovery from this was two weeks out of school each. Fully, each recovery took 3-9 months. This made me miss a bunch of school time, and it put me behind in my school work. Also due to these surgeries, I had to take a day or two each month for checkups.

By missing all this school, I have also missed a lot of the education I was supposed to get. This year I’m hoping to have a normal school year. I am hoping to make it to school every day. I really want to use this year and get the best education possible!
