Hula the Dance of a Thousand Meanings by Annalise - September 2019 Scholarship Essay
Hula would be an amazing addition to our school system as an extracurricular activity. Not only does it promote physical activity it shows the history of a culture, the grace of each movement to tell a story, and creates a family for each student.
Hula is a dance style closely connected to the Hawian islands and its people. It is the way they tell stories of their ancestors, family, events, and prayers. The movement of the dancer's hands are the words that are being said, they are emotions with no audible sound. Their feet are the strength and foundation of the body and the binding to their words. By dancing the hula you learn about a culture, a story, and the hard work it takes to look effortlessly smooth like calm waters. The Halau is your family they are the ones who you spend hours working to perfect your dance and those who will cry with you as you finish a performance because you have spent so long to show so much. Hula is not just a dance its a chance t speak a thousand words with just a tilt of a hand.
It is not just your normal dance team, or another sport it is a way to express emotions of a culture and the stories that it holds. You don't need ears to head the song, or expensive gear to play, all you need is your heart and the passion to dance will all you got.
