Focus, Easier Said Than Done by Annalia - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
One of my New Year's Resolutions is to learn how to focus for longer periods of time. In the past, I haven’t noticed much of an issue with focusing, but recently it has become more apparent. Just last week, I found myself struggling to read for thirty consecutive minutes. Part of the issue can be attributed to the fact that technology and online social platforms are beginning to consume my life. They have become an unnecessary distraction and a habit that I need to limit. I’m constantly multitasking and thinking about other things, rather than focusing on each thing on its own. This has caused my study sessions to break up into smaller pieces. Plus, I have become less productive each time I sit down to study. So what can I change to help improve the situation at hand?
First, I must limit my time on my phone and restrain myself from checking my social media platforms while I'm trying to study. Second, I must find and establish simple solutions that work for me, such as giving myself a break every so often. Discovering the methods that work for me will take time, but I must remember to stick to the plan for the ultimate benefits. Being able to focus is crucial for studying in college now, but it will also be important in the workplace later on. If I don’t work on improving my ability to focus now, it will only get harder.
In summary, my New Year’s Resolution is to learn to focus for longer amounts of time. This will help me become a better student in 2016. The process will consist of baby steps and gradually working up to longer periods of time, and the end result will be worth it.
