The Key to Education by Annalee - July 2019 Scholarship Essay

My passion comes from the desire to fill my curiosity with knowledge. For me, this is the key to Education. As a 17-year-old Running Start student with a 3.9 GPA taking college courses, I work hard in school to learn and perform well. While performing well means earning high scores in upper level classes (classes like Honors English, AP European History, pottery, and college courses like Pre-Calculus, English 101 and 201, American Literature, Philosophy, Sociology, and American History), I find the value of a course comes more from the knowledge I gain than the letter grade I earn. Having studied time periods in history where learning was for the few and would hardly have happened to me, I feel grateful to live in a time period where the education of citizens is a priority. I have studied subjects ranging from English to Mathematics to History to Philosophy, but still I yearn for more.
I want to travel to Florence, Italy, so that I can learn the artistic techniques used during the Renaissance in sculpture and painting. I love Renaissance art and Ancient Greek art and sculpture. My favorite artist is Michelangelo, and my second is Botticelli. I sculpt, sketch, and draw cartoons. I am in the process of trying to publish my cartoons and am learning Italian in my spare time. I like bike riding and hiking. I enjoy classic movies, and I love classic cars. I go to art museums and car museums.
I hope to practice my Italian and enjoy the deep history and culture. I plan to sculpt in bronze and marble, to publish cartoons, and to paint in oils. I like to see the beauty in things, and I want to create beauty in the world that others can enjoy as well. Sometimes my dreams feel overwhelming, but at other times, invigorating. I want to share my art with the world.
All of this, of course, entails education. My curiosity drives me to learn as much as I can about people and their cultures, to question all I see, and to experience life as best I can. The formal education I’ve received from my schooling has helped prepare me for the rest of my life to follow my curiosity wherever it may guide me. My joy from knowledge will never escape me.
