Human Body by Annabella - January 2023 Scholarship Essay
The human body has over 80 billion neurons, and 206 bones we humans are the most complex species in the animal kingdom. With the ability to adapt to different conditions, and still keep homeostasis humans are currently the most powerful beings on this planet.
For most of us, we start school when we are about six years old, and then we learn about the basics of every core class, naming shapes, learning our ABCs, and learning why plants need water. It is not until high school that you learn the fundamental process of the human body and in most schools, students can choose to take anatomy or another science class. But why is it schools focus kids on learning the anatomy of plants and the earth before evening mentioning the human body? Why is it that students are dumped with hundred of new terms about the human body at an older age?
I believe that humans should start being required to teach basic anatomy from elementary school to high school. I am a strong believer that humans should have the right to know about their bodies. When we don't teach our kids basic health and anatomy that's why problems in our youth arise. Many girls maturing start getting their periods and many times they feel scared and uneducated. If we start teaching our youth about their health and why things happen I believe it would benefit us all.
If we all knew about basic anatomy we could be able to tell a doctor exactly when and where something hurts and maybe we can even recognize the problem ourselves and treat it without a doctor. Many citizens don't have free health care so being able to know your own body and recognize the problem could save families hundreds of dollars. If we learn basic anatomy then we can learn basic things such as CPR. I believe as a part of anatomy classes we should require students to learn basic CPR. By being able to know CPR students can be prepared for any incident. Cardiac arrests happen more often than you think and 9/10 people don't survive. If we have bystanders who can perform CPR that person's survival rate has increase dramatically.
In conclusion, taking basic anatomy classes while being young and knowing CPR could improve humanity and save many lives. Although it is important to know what plants do its even more important to understand how our own body works.
