"The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", a Tale That Never Grows Old by Anna Maria - October 2023 Scholarship Essay
C.S. Lewis's "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" has transported me to a land of wonder and beauty for as long as I have been able to read. In this story four children, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy, are taken into a magical world known as Narnia by entering an ancient wardrobe, in an old British manor. Here they are met by an evil queen, named the White Witch, as they travel to meet the great Lion and guardian of Narnia, Aslan, in the city of Cair Paravel. Under his guidance the children defeat the forces of evil which have terrorized Narnia for hundreds of years, and are made kings and queens of the land. They govern together for many years until, by chance, they stumble back through the wardrobe and find themselves in twentieth century England again.
I love this book because of the fierce battle between good and evil which takes place. The White Witch, selfish, powerful and cruel, is overthrown by four young children, chosen by the protector of the land, to rule in kindness, truth and justice. The imagery which Lewis uses, such as the nymphs, dryads, fawns and centaurs dancing in deep forests and the cold, dark winter which has frozen the world, pull you right into the story. Each character has his or her own virtues and vices, which the reader can understand and relate to. I, in particular, relate to Susan as the somewhat bossy, older sister who tries to control, but also wants what is best for her siblings. I wish to be more like Lucy, who is open-minded, kind and courageous; I love how the author has made a young, small girl the hero to the people of Narnia. Each and every time I read "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" I discover a new layer to the plot. To me, this book is an old friend, who is always revealing new things to me and who will forever take me to a world of wonder and enchantment.
