Kurt Cobain by Anna - February 2016 Scholarship Essay
If I could have dinner with any historical figure, it would definitely have to be Kurt Cobain. Not only is he a historical figure in the rock community, but he also put places like Olympia, Aberdeen, and Seattle, towns in Washington that have been a part of my childhood, on the map. Kurt Cobain is a musical legend, not only with instruments but also lyrically. He did not have the best upbringing with his parents divorcing after a toxic marriage, and then going through a lot of mental health issues and addictions. Although he had all of these problems he managed to turn some of them around in a positive light. Kurt Cobain was a complex and completely fascinating man.
I would love to have dinner with Kurt because wanting to go into the medical field, I have always been interested in people with conditions like Kurt. It has been known that ever since he was younger he had stomach problems, which was very likely to lead to his drug and alcohol abuse because he was self medicating. Kurt also fell into a deep depression for parts of his life. Maybe if Kurt could have gotten help from a medical professional, he would still be alive today.
Another reason I would like to have dinner with Kurt Cobain is because even though he is well known for his drug addiction and his toxic relationship, he did some pretty admirable things. Not only was Kurt Cobain a musical legend, he also used the fame that he gained to stand up for what he believed in. Kurt Cobain didn't really fit in at his high school because he preferred music and art over sports and popularity. He was bullied to the point that he ended up dropping out of high school during his senior year. Once he was famous he stood up for the kids that were like him. Kurt also believed in standing up for women and gay rights.
Having dinner with Kurt Cobain would not only be extremely interesting, but also informative. I would be able to talk to him about his medical conditions and his addictions and analyze what could have been if he would have reached out for help. It would also be super interesting to learn more about his roots here in my home, Washington. Kurt Cobain was a troubled man who turned a lot of his problems into amazing music that is still popular today.
