Better Brain by Anna - August 2022 Scholarship Essay

During the school year of 2021-2022, things didn't go exactly my way. My brother was in a tragic accident at the beginning of the year, as well as my parents started to file for a divorce. Not something that you want to focus on when you are trying to achieve the highest in your academics. My attention was elsewhere when it came to academics this past year. I was joining every club that I could to try to fill up my time, so I would be distracted from all of the negative events that were happening. With this, my grades started to slip. I was getting all C in my classes which is not normal for me. I simply couldn’t focus on my academics and felt as if I was failing myself.

This year, my goal is to change that. I have realized that not everything will go as I plan and there will be bumps in the road. But I can not let this take me away from what is most important to me at the moment, my education. During the summer, I have found ways to help me with my distraction. One of the most helpful resources has been therapy. It has given me a time and a place to talk to someone about what is happening and to find solutions for myself. With having a designated time and place for reflection, I now am able to bring my attention in class to my schoolwork. Instead of thinking about how everything is going wrong and how I can fix it. My goal is to achieve better grades while also achieving better mental health.
