The struggle was real by Anna - August 2014 Scholarship Essay

Going to school is one of my favorite things in the world. The reason that my English wasn't so great was because I learned Spanish at home so I could only say a couple words in English the basic yes or no. Many didn't understand me due to the fact I was speaking Spanish only. My dad always put me in English only classes because he believed if you learn one language at school at a time you'll do better. Well I guessed it worked until I got older.

When I started middle school my teachers would read to us while we read along in our heads. To me I felt they should of let us try first so we would understand more but they didn't. During my first years in High School it was becoming more and more challenging. I finally couldn't handle all of my teachers not helping me with learning how to read. So, I went to the library everyday for a year and I would read a new book every week.

After, a long time of reading short stories I went on to read a more considerable genre for my age. I never understood there were so many different types of subjects, genres, and amazing true stores. Of all of the books I learned to, love romance, comedy, and mystery. When I was in Elementary School all the way to High School I would always have a teacher tell me that I wouldn't accomplish anything because I didn't know English and that was the worst thing they could have said to me.It makes me sad that there are teachers that wouldn't help me just because I didn't understand.

When I was in English class I was struggling a lot to concentrate on doing my work. So, I tried different ways to focus on my class work. After many weeks passed, reading my book was getting less and less difficult. I felt insecure to tell my teacher that I didn't understand the book but I had to learn by myself. I loved that even though some people didn't believe in me I have proved them wrong. Now, I'm a National Spanish and English Honor Society member which I accomplished last year in the fall and Spring. This year I had the honor of being recognized as a National Honor Scholar and will be in the Cum Laude of my class.

Life is about achieving your own greatness and making yourself a better person in this world. Even though things may not be going your way you can always find something that will make you better. Reading was difficult for me but after many weeks in the library I became a more understanding person. I feel that you can overcome anything if you just put your mind and heart into it. Don't ever let anyone tell you you can't do something because you can do anything you put effort and determination in. I know that I am going to do great in the future and my dream will come true.
