Dinner with a Bullmoose by Anna - October 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I could have dinner with any of the presidents it would be with Teddy Roosevelt. Teddy Roosevelt strikes me as a man that had conviction and was very self-motivated. His works with the national parks was something that is yet to be rivaled to this day, and I believe it is the most enduring part of his legacy.
Growing up in Waupaca, WI, my family was naturally outdoorsy and went to a lot of the state and national parks, as we are known for our lakes and parks. Camping became a central part of my childhood, and it remains important to me to this day. I believe that my experience outdoors helped foster my creativity and personality, and helped me be more aware of my surroundings and the world at large. As a result, I have become more sensitive to the consequences of my lifestyle, and subsequently have committed myself to reducing my negative impact on the world. I think that now in the world of technology and innovation our connection with nature has become strained, so Teddy’s work is more important perhaps now more than ever. Having dinner with him would grant me the opportunity to firstly thank him for his work, and secondly gain some wisdom from him to incorporate into my own life with the hopes of impacting the world to the same degree.
