Literature: The Major Key by Anna - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
Ever since I learned to read words have fascinated me. From the Magic Treehouse chapter books to classic literature, reading has always been a passion of mine. When reality got the best of me, I was the cliché: the kid under the covers with a flashlight escaping to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry or following the adventures of Tom Sawyer. I know that not all of my peers feel the same way about literature as I do, but if I were a teacher, I would love to teach English to try and show my students the same escape I find in words.
Words are one of our most powerful forces in this world. Words have shaped countries, changed lives for the better and the worse, and have changed the world. In my opinion, the pursuit of mastering language is a noble one because it can change your life. If a student can craft an essay using the skills they’ve been taught, they can get a chance to earn money to go to college, to pursue their dreams. If a student is having trouble in the real world, they can escape to literature to find inspiration in the triumphs or amusement in their folly. Literature is one of the greatest gifts you can give to someone, and the thought of giving that gift to groups of students at a time would be an awesome opportunity.
Critics may argue and say that mathematics and sciences are more important, and as someone with the intent of pursuing a degree in the health sciences I agree, science and math are essential in our lives today. But, how can we learn without reading? Millions of scientific journals have been published; libraries full of medical literature lay waiting for eager eyes. Literature is found in so many fields. Without words and language and communication, advancements in medicine, technology, mathematics, agriculture, psychology, and so many other fields would be impossible. Words inspire. Teachers inspire. Were I to be a teacher, I would want to share my passion and knowledge for literature with future generations.
