The Queen of Confidence by Ann - February 2016 Scholarship Essay
I never thought I would adopt the mantra “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world,” and although I really like that quote from a gal named Norma Jean I have a few that I like better.
“My illusions didn’t have anything to do with being a fine [young woman]. I knew how third rate I was. I could actually feel my lack of talent, as if it were cheap clothes [that] I was wearing [on the] inside. But, my God, how I wanted to learn, to change [and] to grow!” Marilyn Monroe
As I surf through the internet several times a day, I am bombarded by images of beauty and glamour. I don’t know who most of these women are and I don’t trust put any faith in their “images” but one iconic woman who mirrors the body positivity and inner beauty I strive for is Marilyn Monroe. I would love to sit down and have a heart-to-heart conversation with Marilyn to talk about how she embraced her iconic body style; her curves, voluptuous bosoms and hour-glass figure.
Marilyn Monroe is still, more than a half-century after her death, the ideal and most envied bombshell model and singer of all time. After doing a little research about her, I was convinced that I can be who I want to be in my body and I am beautiful no matter how many curves I have. During the height of her singing and modeling career, Marilyn used her stardom to inspire others, including me.
“No one ever told me I was pretty when I was a little girl. All little girls should be told they’re pretty even if they’re not.”
“Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.”
So many people have this misconception that Marilyn was just some bimbo who didn’t have an intelligent bone in her body, but that is so far from the truth. I would want to talk with Marilyn and really get to know the humanitarian, art and animal loving person she really was. I would ask her how she thought she could handle the stress and stardom better: in a healthier way. I would want to get to know the woman that keeps me smiling when I occasionally feel down about my weight or curvy figure.
I leave you with just this last quote that I find priceless:
“I like to be really dressed up or really undressed. I don’t bother with anything in between.” No matter how you see it, I agree with Marilyn Monroe wholeheartedly. No matter my type of body, I should embrace it and be proud of who I am.
