Easiest answer I could possibly have for this question with all the books that I have read for classes is the novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. In high school as a senior I had to pick a novel that was related to my English Literature class. After seeing the sub subject of gothic literature stand out to me I had chosen, The Picture of Dorian Gray. I didn’t know what I was in for when the cover was boring and blank but I never judge a book by its cover. The story is timeless in the essence of Dorian Gray being so infatuated with his beautiful physique that others imposing on him manipulate the ins and outs of his personality and looks. I had fallen in love with the themes because even though the story was written in 1890, I was able to relate the story to today’s time era. The themes being the perception of beauty and youth and negative influences as well as the motif of homoerotic relationships is what we are encountering as a young generation today. For a story to be told with such passion that Oscar Wilde displays for a time era that relates to the present is timeless. I was able to relate to the issues that Wilde implied between the lines. The perception of beauty and youth is a huge factor in my life before I read this book. If we hide our personality through our looks people will never know what type of person we truly are. Beauty isn’t everything and that is what Wilde taught me in this story as well as to love who you want to love no matter what gender, sex, or race that they are. These deep lessons reflect on one self as a youth because of the choices that you make are either right or wrong, they impact you and imprint you as a person. I love this novel so much that I have asked others to read it because my generation is capable of relating as well as enjoying a dark mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
