My Mentor Who Made a Difference by Anil - January 2025 Scholarship Essay
Throughout my educational journey, I have been extremely fortunate to learn from many different individuals, but one teacher stands out. Mr. Head my honors Algebra 2 teacher, helped transform how I viewed learning. Mr. Head always could connect with his students, and he shaped how I viewed my academics and my personal life.
Before I met Mr. Head, my mentor, I often doubted myself when working or studying. But he saw potential in me that I didn’t recognize in myself. For example, during a specific challenging unit, he helped me break down the ideas and made it easier for me to grasp the material.
Also Mr. Head had this special ability, to teach lessons that extended beyond academics. I personally remember one day during my varsity tennis season; Mr. Head came to one of my matches and cheered me on the whole time. Also, that same day he told my parents and I, “You are doing so many great things with Anil, and it is showing in the classroom, I love having him as a student.” One other quality that I admired from my math teacher is that he always greeted his students when they walked into the classroom and always tries to make them feel welcome no matter their ethnicity.
Even after I graduated from his class, the lessons I learned from him and his class continue to shape my decisions. Their encouragement sparked my interest in civil engineering. He taught me that school is not just about work and studying but that it can be fun too.
