Video Games Made me More Productive by Anika - November 2022 Scholarship Essay
Video games. They are the bane of every parent’s existence. When you complain about random muscle aches or notice a slight slip in your grades, they will not hesitate to connect it back to video games by using snarky remarks. However, the more I play video games, the more I realize their odd similarity to school. Grind, dedication, skill, grit, and many more qualities are needed to be successful in school and while playing video games. With my senioritis kicking into full swing, I decided it was time to apply those positive aspects I gained from gaming to my school work.
Homework, tests, and quizzes are all just games if you think about it. Granted, maybe not the most fun games. Homework is the mini-boss, it gives you the practice needed to tackle the final boss and you can earn some points along the way, or in this case, grades. The final boss, of course, is the tests. After hours of grinding and practice, your efforts will be reflected through your overall level in the game, or again, grades. I thought to myself if I can spend hours playing video games, then I certainly have the capabilities to study for school and finish my assignments.
We all have that one interest that can miraculously turn hours into minutes. I learned that we must utilize skills we gained from those interests in other areas for a well-rounded life. Video games, a hobby that is looked down upon, gave me the strength I needed to cope with senioritis and regain my productivity.
