Growing up, it was just my mom, my two younger sisters, and me. While my sisters had an involved father, I did not, as my father was frequently in and out of prison. Neither of my parents pursued higher education, so I had no clear example of what that path entailed. All I saw was how my mom struggled. While she loved us deeply, we lacked stability.
Watching my mother and sister battle cardiovascular complications ignited a desire within me to understand how I could help. This experience sparked my interest in cardiology and the medical field. However, I didn’t fully grasp how to make this dream a reality.
In 2017, my mother's mental health declined, and I watched the woman who raised me disappear before my eyes. Then, in 2018, I was adopted by my great aunt. Though it was heartbreaking to lose my mother in her true form, my great aunt, who had attended college, gave me a newfound sense of direction and hope.
Where I See Myself in 10 Years
In 10 years, I see myself as a medical professional—either a Physician Assistant or a Medical Doctor—specializing in cardiology. I will have completed medical school and begun practicing medicine, making a tangible difference in underserved communities. My goal is to establish a clinic that serves minority and underrepresented populations, addressing healthcare disparities and ensuring individuals receive the care they deserve.
How My Education Will Help Me Get There
To reach this goal, I plan to major in Biochemistry and Psychology at a four-year university, choosing between the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. These fields will provide a strong foundation in biological sciences and mental health, enabling me to approach medicine holistically. College will also offer research opportunities, mentorship, and hands-on experience, preparing me for medical school.
Financial Need and the Importance of This Scholarship
This dream comes with a cost. I must cover college expenses, medical school, and the eventual establishment of my clinic. This scholarship will bring me closer to my future without overwhelming debt. As a Black woman, I recognize the challenges I face, but I am determined to defy the odds. This scholarship will lessen financial barriers, allowing me to focus on my education and service.
