A New Beginning by Angie - June 2013 Scholarship Essay
After graduating High School, I made many mistakes. I met a guy, moved to a different state, got married, and had a baby. I did not give any thought of going to college after High School. I assumed that I would remain married and my husband would support my daughter and I. After only two years I was divorced and raising my daughter all alone.
Wanting to find a job in the medical field, I decided to search for a quick program that I could take. I found a school that did not require any prerequisites and only took one year to complete. I attended a Vocational School to obtain my license as a Psychiatric Technician. After a year, I completed the course, passed my state boards, and received my license.
I started my job search with no luck. After about five months I was hired at a medical office as a Medical Assistant. I quickly became comfortable in my position and thought that this job could support my daughter and I forever. After only two years, I got fired and had nothing to fall back on. My state license still could not get my a job and no one would hire me.
One day, my fiancé's mother suggested to me that I go back to school to receive my Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. I told her there was no way I would be able to go back to school again because I had to find a way to support my daughter. After much encouragement from her, I made the decision to return to school to pursue my dreams of becoming a nurse. I believe that attending college to pursue this degree will provide my daughter and I with a new beginning and the fresh start that we need.
