My Gratitude Towards The Music Program by Angeles - November 2015 Scholarship Essay
In Riverside California, there is only one school in the district that offers the opportunity to play a stringed instrument, and that is Poly High School. They started the music program in certain elementary schools and in one middle school.
I joined the music program in fourth grade. I picked up the violin, not knowing how to play it. It was a struggle, because it was like learning a new language. Throughout the years many kids began to drop out of the program.
By the time I was in Middle School only five out of thirty kids were still in the program. Our Orchestra was petit. We had an amazing teacher, Mr. Guzman, who really pushed us to our best. I not only met my best friends through the music program , but I gained more skills. By my last year in middle school, I was awarded the most improved.
Going into high school, I observed many talented people. I met students from different backgrounds, that taught me more. Those kids tried out for the opportunity to play at Carnegie Hall. UCR, began to do one concert with us, which was magnificent. I was taken to places that inspired me to continue music in college.
The orchestra was fortunate to take a master class from an Oboe player that is in the San Diego Symphony. Also, we had the privilege to record music with Disney, which was an amazing experience the music program has brought to me. I am not only grateful for my mom pushing me to continue playing, but for the teachers and people who have brought the music program to Riverside.
