A Better Life for my Family by Angela - June 2013 Scholarship Essay

When I turned eighteen I thought I knew it all. I moved in with my boyfriend, I quit going to school, and I partied all of the time. I did not take long for the consequences of that life style to catch up with me. One month before I turned nineteen I had my son and I had to learn to be an adult real fast. I now had bills to pay and another life I was responsible for. Over the next several years my boyfriend and I married and had another child. Through all of it we have struggled to pay the bills and keep food on the table. Four years ago my husband decided that he had had enough of just getting by and he wanted more out of life. He quit his job at Wendy’s and moved us to another city so that he could go to a technical school. After finishing there he got a great job and is able to provide more for us than we ever had before. However, with this job we still live month to month with nothing in the savings account. To me going back to college means money in the saving account and a future for my family. College also means getting out of that dead end job that I have been working for too many years and getting a job that I can actually enjoy and be proud to have. Most importantly to me, finishing college shows my children that college is important and hopefully my struggles at college ten years after high school will encourage my children to finish school before starting a family.
