The academic subject I learned the most in by Angela - August 2016 Scholarship Essay

Everyone typically has a favorite subject; for most, that subject will be the one they excelled in. The subject I learned the most from during my three years of high school would be English. English typically is an overlooked subject in my opinion – one that my peers often look toward begrudgingly. However, my high school career would have been much more difficult without this class because it helped me to become a better writer, reader, as well as being a fun class that allowed me to grow as a student.
Writing is an important part of life that is taken for granted by many. In order to grow as a student, the curriculum in English class typically snowballs; without the information I learned in ninth grade about using similes, metaphors, and alliteration for example, I would not be able to realize the true meaning of comparisons or repetitive sounds. We also did research papers which helped me learn how to find information for a paper and write about the subject. The grading process is said to have similarities to how professors in college grade papers for their students. This means, that through English class, I am learning to write and comprehend at a higher level.
Equally important to learning how to write would be reading. In English you learn many things from reading - whether from a book, journal, or even a play. There are many different ways that an author will try to convey their work. Specifically during junior year, we were asked to read stories that were written by early Americans and Indians, and poems from various famous American poets from our textbooks. We also read a few short novels which we then would compare clips of their respective movie. Analysis of the books underlying themes and meanings were stressed in class because by learning this skill, you are then able to understand the true meaning behind the words written and grow your vocabulary in ways you hadn’t thought possible.
English wasn’t just about reading and writing in class though, we also were able to do fun things in class as well. An example would be the blogs we created for class. My teacher would give us a prompt to write about, using at least two hundred words, and then we would have to comment on at least two blog posts that were written by my peers. This made writing exciting for me because it allowed for a less structured form. Along the way, we also had many projects. Some projects were simple, such as posters, while others were harder like the PowerPoints that we had to explain to the class about our topic. I believe that in order to learn, the material has to be given in a way that engages students, so having fun leads to learning, and learning to growth.
Overall, high school English has enabled me to become a more developed student. I have not only become a better reader, and writer, but I have also been able to learn better because of the fun projects we did throughout the years.
