Investment in Education by Angel-Inez - December 2017 Scholarship Essay

“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” – Benjamin Franklin. This quote resonates with me, because growing up my education has always been important to me. With my education I plan to teach others. I was inspired by my family and peers to become an educator. So far my education has been a long road, but it has been an investment in my future students and my interest.
My grandma was an elementary school teacher before she retired. So when I would visit her during the summer we would spend our days together working on math worksheets and teaching myself how to read. She was so focused on teaching me, and she was the same way with her students. Being able to go to her classes with her occasionally showed me how important being a teacher is. Her perseverance and motivation inspired me.
When I’m in school, I’ll occasionally have my classmates ask for help. I never found it irritating, and I felt like I was doing something useful. Helping people understand and get what they’re doing has also inspired me to become an educator. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing you have had an impact on someone by helping them.
Math has always been an intriguing subject for me. I’m a big fan of puzzles, and I see math problems as different puzzles. Some types are easier some are harder. Math is a difficult subject, but it can be enjoyable when you have the right teacher that helps you get what you’re doing. I did have a rough start when I had my first math class, algebra, but now it’s my favorite subject and I’m pursuing an education degree to teach it.
My investment in knowledge has paid the best interest in my favor. I’ve worked hard in school, and I’m hopeful it will pay off. With this education I hope that I’ll be able to help and inspire more people to follow similar paths to mine. Knowledge is an important part of life, and it’s important it’s spread around for everyone to get a chance to learn.
