My academic role-model by Angel - September 2013 Scholarship Essay
As I push myself each day to do better in my academic course, I always remember that one person who pushed me like no other person has. Who empowered me with full motivation. Who made me believe anything is possible if you remain focused. I've met her in my freshmen year and she straightened me out completely. My academic role model is my instructor, Sergeant first class Williams. To start off my freshman year I went to Farragut Career Academy in the army JROTC course. I wanted to start fresh, but I also wanted to stay low to prevent me any trouble. I wasn't the smartest student out there, I wasn't even the most active out there, and I didn't even know exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I came to school and did my work like any other regular student, but after a few weeks I've joined a team, The first team, Honor guard, they soon kicked me out due to my bad attendance. So I was teamless for a while until Sergeant Williams came to me, asked me if I were in a team, and if I wanted to join her team , color guard, and I just decided to accept the invitation. Then soon came sophomore year and soon it was going to end. I've done my regular routine, but she was different. When she saw my attendance and decent grades, she told me to bring it up and to miss no more school. She told me she wouldn't tolerate my absences if it keeps up and I'm a smart student and that I can get higher grades. The way she spoke to me induced fear, to stop me from missing anymore school, the way she told me that I can do better in my academics built my self-esteem and motivated me. By junior year, I've entered her classroom and she wanted not only me, but the entire class to shine. She told us stories that she's experienced. Telling us anything is possible and no one can tell us different. I've took her words and put myself to the test. I came to school everyday, started to get straight As in all my classes and I've started getting recognition from all my hard work. She pushed me to do more and break my limit so that in the end I'll have no limits. Now I'm here as a senior, not only is she my homeroom teacher and cares for my success, she also is a very close person to me like a motherly figure and I would do what I can to make her proud. I wouldn't make it this far and this successful without her and her words. In fact, my homeroom classmates would agree that she cares for them and do what it takes to help us achieve nothing but greatness. I am proud to say that this is why Sergeant First-class Williams is my academic role-model.
