If I could design a project to improve my school or community, I would create a free technology and data literacy program for middle and high school students. Technology is a major part of everyday life, but many students only learn how to use devices rather than understanding how technology works or how it can be used to solve problems. As someone who plans to study Data Science in college, I believe providing students with these skills would help prepare them for future careers and create opportunities that can positively impact our community.

The program would focus on teaching coding, data analysis, digital literacy, and problem-solving through hands-on activities. Instead of only listening to lectures, students would work on projects that connect technology to real issues in their schools and neighborhoods. For example, students could collect and analyze data about traffic around their school, create simple apps that help students stay organized, or develop solutions to problems they see in their community. By working on projects that have a direct impact on their surroundings, students would see that technology is not just something they use every day but also a powerful tool for creating change.

Another important part of the program would be mentorship. I would partner with local colleges, businesses, and community organizations to bring in volunteers who work in technology-related fields. These mentors could share their experiences, answer questions, and help students understand the many career opportunities available to them. Many young people have never met a data scientist, software engineer, or technology professional. Having access to mentors could inspire students to pursue goals they may not have previously considered possible.

I would also make sure the program is accessible to everyone. One challenge many students face is a lack of access to technology resources outside of school. To address this, the program would be free and would provide equipment whenever possible. I would also offer flexible meeting times so students with jobs, sports, or family responsibilities could still participate. Every student should have the opportunity to learn valuable skills regardless of their financial situation.

This project is important to me because education has played a major role in my own life. As an Early College student, I earned my Associate in Science degree while completing high school. Through that experience, I learned how education can create opportunities and open doors to a better future. I have also seen that many students are capable of achieving great things when they are given the right support and resources.

Beyond helping individual students, this program would benefit the entire community. Technology continues to shape nearly every industry, and communities need people who can think critically, analyze information, and solve complex problems. By helping students develop these skills at a young age, we would be investing in future leaders, innovators, and professionals who can contribute to the success of our community.

My goal would not simply be to teach technology. I would want students to gain confidence in themselves and realize that they can make a difference. When young people believe they have the ability to solve problems and improve the world around them, they become more engaged in their schools and communities. I believe this project would help create that mindset while giving students practical skills they can use throughout their lives. By empowering students through technology and education, we can build a stronger community and create opportunities that will continue to benefit future generations.
