I am worthy by Angel - March 2022 Scholarship Essay
Social media plays a role in the lives of young adults, especially in 2022. Social media possesses the power to make or break a student. Influences take over the decisions students make with their academic life. There are also influencers that may have the intention of encouraging a student but ends up actually hurting them. At the end of the day, it’s up to the student to make the decision that will best benefit their future life.
Social media has been a part of my life from a very young age, I essentially grew up with social media. I always loved being able to share my life with my friends and loved ones through snapchat and instagram posts. Though social media was not all about sharing your life, it was also about sharing the tips and tricks to a better life through past experiences. The main factor I loved about social media was being able to gain encouragement from other peoples posts.
I especially enjoy the social media app “TikTok.” TikTok has brought so many new opportunities into my life. I always get academic based TikToks pop up on my feed page. These academic videos have shaped my way of learning and growing in high school. Through TikTok, I am able to learn new studying habits, mental health improvement skills, and learn how to access scholarships opportunities; like this one. I have improved my grades and social skills from freshman year of high school. I have become more involved with community projects and am able to help students when they need help academically or emotionally.
Social media has been a great advantage to my education, yet there are times when social media has brought me down. Oftentimes, posts about successful students show up on my feed page. The successful students try to encourage my academic career yet have the ability to lower my motivation. Their success has the ability to stress me out about the idea of me not working hard enough in school. Seeing high GPAs and a huge list of achievements makes a person feel of lesser quality because of their non-existent high GPA and mighty achievements list. Though those videos have the capability of stressing me out, I remember that I am worthy of such achievements if I work hard enough. I must remember that I have a goal to achieve, and the achievement of that goal will be sure to make me the happiest person alive.
Social media can be both an advantage and dis-advantage in a student's academic career. The videos of new studying habits and mental health improvements skills are vital for students. Yet, when a video of a very successful student pops up, a student must remember that everyone is different. With the right mindset, students will also be able to pursue such achievements and success. Everyone is capable of success, hard work will eventually pay off. The encouragement of social media users will play a great role in a student's academic success.
