What is AVID? by Angel - December 2019 Scholarship Essay
An organization that I was part of during my high school career was Avid. The AVID program is a nonprofit organization that changes lives by helping schools shift to a more equitable, student-centered approach. This program trains faculty to teach students to be prepared for their futures and to be “AVID Ready”. This program can be seen as both an academic and community-based program because AVID creates a family of diversity, and talented people who all have one goal in the future; That goal is to be successful. This goal for success among all of the members of AVID is what makes it an academic-based program. These students will go above and beyond, taking harder classes and putting a higher focus on education, than other students.
The AVID program has affected me greatly, beginning during my freshman year of high school. When I first started high school, I had a goal of just getting through my four years with the minimum and applying to my community college to get any degree. But, after my friend told me about AVID and how it helps people with being organized and developing skills for the future, I was intrigued.
Soon after, my entire mindset about education has changed. Before, I was just settling for the minimum to get out of high school and go to a community college. Now, I have been taking many rigorous classes and a goal to be accepted to a CSU or UC and get my degree for structural engineering.
AVID has changed my life entirely and it has greatly changed my future. AVID should be emphasized a lot more across the world for students to have the opportunity to improve themselves by learning skills and the meaning of being “College Ready”.
