You are More Than Enough by Andrew - July 2025 Scholarship Essay

I often spend my time reflecting back on who I used to be when I was growing up. I was really shy, short, quirky, and a lone wolf for my entire adolescence. I often thought that there was something wrong with me because I didn't quite fit in with the crowd. People seemed like they were trying hard to avoid me. Which made me feel like I was irrelevant, and insignificant. When I was young all I wanted to do was fit in and be accepted. I wanted people to like me so that I could have the camaraderie and friendship that every student seemed to have except for me. Because I was lacking what most kids my age had, I felt really insecure about myself. I felt like I didn’t have what was needed in order to be accepted, valued, and appreciated. I felt like I wasn’t enough. So if I could go back in time today and have a conversation with myself, I would reassure him that you are more than enough. All while giving myself a gigantic bear hug.
I would start the conversation by saying “don’t be too hard on yourself, you’re a really cool guy”. The primary reason you believe you’re not enough right now is because the way you think is pessimistic and unhealthy. But, over the next couple of years you will have some experiences that are going to help change the way you think. These experiences are going to be challenging and uncomfortable, but they are necessary to get you to see yourself as the strong, confident, compassionate, charismatic, and wholesome young man that you are. Although some of the challenges that you are experiencing right now are making you question your self worth, I’m here to reassure you that you are not lacking anything. You might not be the tallest man in the room. You might not be the funniest man in the room. You might not even be the best looking man in the room. But believe me when I tell you that you are tall enough, you are funny enough, and you are handsome enough. You are perfectly imperfect and deserving of every dream that you can imagine.
