Education the Fuel for Action by Andrew - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

Interests are often defined by aspirations and motivations and this is true in my life. But it is education that provides the fuel that produces action from interest.

I aspire both to create a material whose properties switch states when electrical current is applied, and to make a lightweight and convenient form of individual flight.

When current is applied the material would switch between a ridged and fluid, or cloth-like state. I believe a material that can be both rigid and fluid could overcome the limitations of current materials.

Flight has always fascinated me. I have begun making designs and notes on how to make a lightweight and convenient way to fly, some of which involve the material I described in the above paragraph. I feel that a convenient and safe form of individual flight will grow in demand and necessity. It is my goal to help meet this demand.

My motivation comes from my little brother. He initially used a solid plastic brace to stabilize his leg, but the brace limited his ability to walk quickly, much less run. Later, he began using a new Carbon Fiber brace. I noticed how much easier he was able to walk and run with the added flexibility of the carbon fiber.

The idea of conducting research and working on projects that can make life easier for others is the source of dreams and a high motivation for me. I hope to be fulfilling these dreams through skills learned and teamwork with higher education.
