Preparing for a Future in Dentistry by Andrew - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
Throughout my childhood, I was saturated with the idea of dentistry. Because my mother is a dental hygienist, she would tell me stories about the things she saw and what she did in her office. I was immediately intrigued by this profession. At about 12 years old, I was dead set on becoming a dentist for two major reasons. The first reason was that I enjoyed the idea that someone with a problem, whether that be a toothache or a simple cavity, would come to me, and I would be able to send them away without that problem. The idea that I could truly help someone and maybe improve their quality of life. The second reason was that I would be my own boss. Having this, I will have more flexibility and autonomy as well as the opportunity to progress in my business and career. As a dentist, my goal is to own my own practice and control how my business will be run.
In college, I will study Biochemistry, with a minor in Business. Biochemistry will give the knowledge and help complete my dental school prerequisites. A minor in Business will aid in my aspirations of owning my own dental practice. Having a difference in my areas of study will allow me to branch out of the STEM fields and broaden my perspectives.
During my high school career, I have worked hard in all my classes, participated in many extracurriculars, and played music and sports. All in the hopes to become an asset to the school of my choice and earn the scholarships to make this happen. In addition to my mother’s influence, my school district’s Career and Technical Education programs have largely encouraged my inclination to become a dentist. My high school offers a dental assisting pathway that I am taking. One of the requirements for this course is 40 observational hours, giving me the opportunity to talk to and watch a few dentists. This has furthered my interest in this field vastly. Another learning tool I have taken advantage of is HOSA. HOSA is a career and technical student organization for those interested in the health field. Being a part of this organization has not only assisted in my health education, but provided many leadership opportunities. I have been a State Officer for Idaho HOSA this year and it was one of the best academic decisions I have made. I have attended leadership conferences in Cascade and even in Washington DC because of this position. I have been able to expand my academic knowledge and technical skills as well as improve on my soft skills and leadership.
Overall, multiple experiences have impacted my decision to become a dentist. It has been my goal to be decisive and be sure that I am making the right choice. Obtaining the most financial aid I can will ultimately be the best advancement for my future college career.
