The Most Interesting Lesson I Learned in Class by Andrew - August 2013 Scholarship Essay

Going through high school, it was very hard for me to choose what I wanted to do for a career. I remember teachers always giving us assignments, making us research what we would like to do for a career. Those assignments were always hard for me because I wasn’t sure, so I ended up researching the first thing that came to mind. Later as shop classes became available, they caught my attention and I took them. One of the main classes that I had the most fun learning in was my Machine Tool Technology class. In that class I learned many things about machines used in today’s society. I was even given the opportunity to use a couple them in my individual projects for the class. The first machine I was taught to use was a lathe. These are used for many different purposes. We used them to make bolts to fit any size hole that we wanted. We also used them to bore out metal to make pipes. Going through the class my teacher would explain many jobs/ careers that used these machines. One of the careers he mentioned quite often was engineering. The more I learned and enjoyed the class the more I began to look into engineering as a possible career path. Another machine that I was taught to use was a Plasma Cam ( high-tech computerized metal cutting machine). On this machine you can make your own design of any kind and it will cut it out. I had to use it for another project in class, so I grew well accustomed to the controls on it. I had a Drafting CAD 1A class which was also really fun and I learned quite a bit from it. The first semester was very interesting but difficult at the same time. We had to draw 3D objects ranging from parts to machines to even doing basic floor plans. The second semester is what really caught my attention, in Drafting CAD 1B. This was the part that dealt with the AUTO CAD. It was just like the first semester but however this time everything was on the computer. My teacher once again told us about engineering and how CAD was a big thing in their field of work. I enjoyed working with the CAD program so much I decided I wanted to get a degree in Aerospace Engineering. Both of these classes was very enjoyable to me not only because I got to use machines that most people don’t know exist but it also helped me to decide in what kind of work I wanted to go in. While in those classes I held a high GPA of keeping A’s in the above classes. Now, I have been accepted into the Engineering Department at the University of Kansas and I am very excited. Thank you for giving me the opportunity in applying for this scholarship, I hope to hear from you soon.
