You have no idea by Andrew - October 2014 Scholarship Essay
My ideal classroom exists, but probably not in the way someone might think. Inside of it, we can become so much more than we already are, transforming our minds physically and gleaning knowledge from the great powers and intellectuals that surround us. Knowledge comes from all around us, not just a single teacher, but our peers, our environment. In an environment so immersive, it would essentially be impossible not to achieve our full potentials.
This classroom would be quiet, isolated, a place of peace for us to focus within. Only when we have focus without distraction can we learn effectively. Focus in the classroom is not the only thing necessary for learning, but also focus in life. Spread yourself too thin, and you lose all effectiveness.
The classroom should be defined by our own individual goals – in other words, we should be able to choose how long we stay, what we want to learn, and the classroom should accommodate. Therefore, the classroom should be specialized to our own needs. Only by choosing your own field of study that you are personally and truly interested in can you learn best. Our individuality and personal quirks speak to the diversity that we each exhibit and should be proud of, and the classroom should help us realize our individuality.
Finally, the classroom should be hot and passionate. A lukewarm environment is not one to learn in, but to relax, and learning should be active. With passion comes innovation and drive. In an environment like this, we can be so much more than we came in being. The classroom should stir us down to the very molecules in our bodies, motivating us to do our best and become as boiled up as the topics we become invested in.
In other words, my ideal classroom is a microwave.
