How to get people to listen to your project with interest by Andrew - December 2017 Scholarship Essay

Past, personalized experiences are what forge one’s future personality and behavior. This is what makes one person different from the next: what they’ve been through versus what someone else has been through. If these personalized experiences are implemented into the creation of a school project, it is more interesting, captivating, and (if the project is being presented) has a greater chance of holding the attention of bored students and teachers.
In order to imbue your project with your past experiences, there must first be a degree of freedom as to the topic of the project. For example, if you are doing a project on the conditions of trench warfare in World War 1 for world history, you may have a difficult time relating to the subject. If you have little in common with your project topic, I find it best to simply make an informative and factual project that meets the requirements for the project. Some subjects are not meant to be fun or engaging for all audiences.
If you have the freedom to choose your topic for a project, I strongly recommend you choose a topic which you are able to grasp because of previous experiences, or a topic which you can personally relate to. A project that I was assigned just last year gave the freedom to choose a topic, so I chose to show how my experiences on high school swim team positively impacted my personal growth. Because I had been involved in the sport for nine years, I had plenty of experiences and opportunities to show how I had grown. My genuine recollections and descriptions of events, places, and people added a personalized tone to the project, which, in turn, transformed the dull, routine presentation into a sort of personalized conversation with each of the listeners.
If you want to improve your success rate for in class projects, I urge you to add personal experiences into your work. Many of the best works of literature include details of the author’s life, such as My Ántonia, The Road, Huckleberry Finn, and many more. I took a page out of their book, implementing personal details into projects, and it worked wonders.
