The Heartfelt Novel: Dear John by Andrea - July 2013 Scholarship Essay
Through out my schooling I had to read many books. Some of the books caught my attention more than other. When i was in highschool their were certain novels that just rambled on about things I had no connection with. However, one book I distinctly recall being a great novel that kept you on your toes and unable to put the book down, and the book was "Dear John" by Nicholas Sparks. The book is about a young man, John, who lives in North Carolina with his father. One summer he meets a young woman who is there on vacation doing volunteer work building houses, quickly they fall in love and you experience there love at first sight heartwarming begining. However, things quickly change. John serves in the Army and was shipped over to Iraq. They tried to keep the romance alive by writing letters, but distance and hardships over seas made it hard to keep up. I personally enjoyed that aspect of the novel because it is very plausable that people went threw the same sinario in Iraq. On one of Johns vacations home his father grows very ill and passes. The woman John had fallen so hard for was one of the only people John had introduced to his father, and his father liked her a lot. This part of the novel had me crying like a 5 year old child. The pain all three of them go threw in that charpter saying goodbye is incredible. I have read a lot of Nicholas Sparks novels. He has a keen way of keeping you on your toes and really grasping your heart. Out of every book I had read in school "Dear John" by Nicholas Sparks was the best.
