Accessibility for all students by Andre - June 2026 Scholarship Essay

If I could design a project to improve my school, I would focus on creating more accessible bathrooms for students with physical disabilities. Every student deserves to feel comfortable, safe, and included in their school environment, but this can be difficult when facilities are not designed to meet everyone's needs. At my school, there is already a limited number of regular student bathrooms, and some bathrooms are reserved for teachers. This can create challenges for students who have physical disabilities and may need additional space, accessibility features, or specialized accommodations. When students cannot easily access appropriate facilities, it can make their school day more stressful and prevent them from fully participating in school activities. My project would involve renovating existing bathrooms or creating additional accessible bathrooms that are equipped with features such as wider entrances, accessible stalls, support rails, and enough space for mobility devices. I would also work with students, staff, and disability advocates to better understand what improvements would be most helpful. This project is important because accessibility is not just a convenience—it is a necessity. Schools should be designed to support all students, regardless of their physical abilities. By improving bathroom accessibility, students with disabilities would have greater independence and confidence while attending school. In addition, the project would help create a more inclusive environment where every student feels respected and valued.
I believe this project would make a meaningful difference because it addresses a practical need while promoting equality and inclusion throughout the school community.
