Old Dan and Little Ann by Anderson - October 2023 Scholarship Essay

"Where the Red Fern Grows" by Wilson Rawls is a book that has had a profound impact on me. The story of a young boy's strong determination to obtain his two hunting dogs and the subsequent bond they form resonated deeply with me. What deeply connected me to the book wasn't just its storyline and themes, but also the fact that it marked my very first experience with a full chapter book during my later elementary years. Before encountering this book, I had no interest in reading and found little enjoyment in it. However, this particular book changed everything. It held me in its grip to the point where I couldn't resist staying up late just to reach the final page. I vividly recall the memory of eagerly turning each page until I reached the end.

The book's themes of determination, loyalty, and the deep connection between humans and animals struck a chord in my heart. The unwavering commitment of the protagonist, Billy, in working hard and saving every penny to achieve his dream of owning hunting dogs taught me the value of persistence and the rewards that come from dedicated effort. This lesson has remained with me throughout my life, encouraging me to pursue my own goals with unwavering determination.

Furthermore, the intense bond between Billy and his dogs, Old Dan and Little Ann, depicted the extraordinary connections that can exist between humans and animals. It instilled in me a profound appreciation for the loyalty and love that pets can provide, teaching me to cherish these relationships and to treat animals with kindness and respect.

As I reflect on "Where the Red Fern Grows," I can't help but think of the book's central theme of perseverance and the deep connections we can form with those we love, whether human or animal. The story has left an indelible mark on me, serving as a reminder of the importance of tenacity, empathy, and the extraordinary bonds that enrich our lives.
