My favorite non-traditional way to learn is through coaching, which gives a more personalized and interactive approach to learning. Unlike a normal classroom setting, coaching centers on individual goals, self-reflection, and practical application. Coaching gives me a sense of motivation, making the learning experience more relevant and impactful.
Currently, I am exploring coaching outside of school. I am a high school cross country coach and my main job is to assist the head coach. However, I do get chances to shine. In one on one time with students, I am able to make quick judgement and deduce what is necessary in order for the students to succeed. I feel a great sense of motivation, the students respect what I have to say, even greater when the students tell me that I have helped them improve.
I have never coached before, but I am a quick and adept learner. I learned most of my coaching techniques from my head coach, who I now work alongside. Coaching has made me faster at problem solving and figuring out the causes for a problem and the solutions to that problem. It has also made me more responsible. I am in charge of a team of high schoolers, we often run off campus. Because of this, there are many dangers that come with it that I must watch out for as their coach. I gained the responsibility of keeping them safe, and that has changed my perspective on responsibility and safety.
Coaching has influenced my personal and professional growth. It has improved my communication, empathy, and problem-solving abilities while also awakening my self-awareness. This non-traditional learning method not only enhances my professional skills but also enriches my personal development, proving that coaching is a powerful and transformative educational tool.
