Breaking the Broken through Passion and Purpose by Anais - May 2023 Scholarship Essay
From the courtroom to the boardroom, the worlds of law and business may seem vastly different on the surface. But when you look closer at the day-to-day activities of professionals in both fields, you'll find surprising similarities that reveal just how closely intertwined these two worlds can be. As a lawyer, your day might be filled with motions, briefs, and client meetings; meanwhile, a typical day for a business person might include sales pitches, budget meetings, and project deadlines. But beyond the surface, there's one common thread that ties these two worlds together: the need for effective communication and negotiation skills. As someone with a passion for both law and business, I have a unique college plan. I plan to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Business prior to law school, as I believe that having both degrees will equip me with the necessary knowledge to one day open my own law firm and bookstore cafe business.
As I reflect on what drives me to pursue a career in law, my mind goes back to a difficult time when my father was fighting for justice in a work injury lawsuit. I witnessed firsthand how the legal system can be unjust and unfair. It broke my heart to see my father, who was the victim, being made to be the guilty one. It took years of fighting and sleepless nights to finally get the justice he deserved. However, the relief of never having to step foot in a courtroom again could never make up for the lost years of my father's life that he will never regain. The years my father lost not being able to perform day-to-day activities because of the restriction of his back injury is something that still haunts me to this day. I had to do the heavy lifting for him whether it be lifting groceries from the car or bringing in boxes because he feared that his job had investigators or lawyers watching to see if he was truly faking his injury. This is something that I will never be able to regain either. The precious time that was lost as my father lay in pain in bed as countless doctors told him all that could be done was temporary pain relief because surgery could result in paralysis or death. The thought of losing my father simply due to carelessness from an employer is a thought no daughter should have to bear. The physical weight of carrying those groceries in as my father watched unable to help his young daughter do such a simple task is the weight the justice system could have taken off if it hadn't been so broken. It was devastating to see how broken the system is and how difficult it is for regular people, like my father, to receive the justice they deserve. That experience fueled my desire to become a lawyer not just for personal gain or prestige, but to use my skills and knowledge to help those who are underserved and marginalized by our current legal system.
But my dream doesn’t stop there, as I also hope to step foot into the world of business. After law school, I dream of opening my own law firm as well as a bookstore cafe business. From a young age, I found solace in literature. Whether it was the fantastical worlds of J.K. Rowling or the thought-provoking stories of Harper Lee, books provided me with an escape from reality during difficult times. Through this love for literature, I want to create a safe space for others, where they can receive hours of peace in the pages of another world as they escape from the chaos of the world around them. I want to provide a place where people can feel inspired, where they can believe that anything is possible with just the turn of a few pages.
Now, as I plan for my future, I am excited to combine my passion for literature with my desire to make a positive impact on the world through law and business. From the very beginning of my journey, I knew that I wanted to make a difference in the world. That's why I decided to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Business before law school. My passion for justice and my love for literature drives me to explore the intersection of law and business, realizing that combining these two fields would be the key to creating a successful and impactful business. I have always believed that a business should be more than just a way to make money. It should be a way to serve the community and support those in need. With my knowledge of law and business, I am determined to create a law firm and bookstore cafe business that will be a safe haven for everyone. As I embark on my journey towards my Bachelor's degree in Business, I know that my studies in accounting, finance, marketing, and management will be instrumental in achieving my dream. I hope to be able to run my law firm effectively, providing the best possible service. And through my bookstore cafe business, I will create a space that is not just welcoming, but also where people from all walks of life can come together, share their love for literature, and feel a sense of belonging.
